Do you ever stop to wonder the “why” behind what people do, behind what you do, everyday? Why do people go to work in the morning? Why do they to go the gym? Why do they go to school? It’s a seemingly mundane question, right? But when you really think about it, our why is invaluable. It’s something we must be clear about and remind ourselves of everyday.
Our why. It’s what gets us out of bed in the morning. It keeps us going when we feel tired, when we feel a twinge of wanting to stop or quit. It helps us stay focused when we face challenges that feel insurmountable. It’s our fuel, our fire. Our resilience, our commitment, our consistency, our purpose.
I’m sure people look around and want to know why people do CrossFit, too. Before I started it, I know I wondered why in the world people would subject themselves to such intense, challenging workouts.
Well, I know my why – to be good at and ready for life and everything it requires. And to stay independent and out of a nursing home forever. But I also wanted to know why our athletes do CrossFit, so I asked them. Below are a collection of their responses. When they find it hard to stop hitting the snooze button at 5:15am or when they’d rather just go home after work instead of hitting the gym… these are their reasons to walk through the doors, put in the work, and do CrossFit.
I do CrossFit to help improve and maintain my health. I have a lot of people who need me in this world for a really long time! -Adrienne
I do CrossFit because I want to be a better me. I want to show my children how to take pride in their well-being along with exposing them to what hard work is and how stellar the reward can be. Selfishly, I find comfort in being part of a family, a team of people who mentor, guide, support, and push me to be my best, all day every day. I get the chance to do something great and show my family how awesome it is to be 100% you. I’m grateful for all of it, no matter what! Life is precious and whatever I can do to ensure I’m here to endure and experience it all is a blessing! -Taylor

To know that I can push my body feels good. I want to stay fit and keep my body in shape so I feel energized and healthy. I discuss health and weight loss with patients all week, so setting a good example is important to me. -Allie
As you can see, CrossFit is not just something we do to help us lose weight or prepare for a big race. Yes, we do care greatly about our physical fitness and that is incredibly important and our foundation. It’s so much more than that, though. We also do it for our mental health, emotional health, our confidence, the accountability, the community… to enhance every single aspect of our life. CrossFit is unique in that sense. Its impact is far reaching; it permeates everything we do.
