Where are you from?
I grew up in the Seattle area, went to high school and college in Southern California, and then spent about 20 years in the Chicago area. I’ve lived in Colorado Springs the past three years.
What do you do?
I’ve worked in a variety of industries, mostly technology startups. I currently run a small software company.
How’d you hear/find out about CrossFit and how long have you been doing it? What motivated you to give it a try in the first place?
I started Crossfit in Illinois about five years ago when I was looking for something to do with my son. It was a really hard period in our lives and we needed something fun to do together. I didn’t know anything about Crossfit other than I kept hearing it was “extreme.” A small box opened in our town and Spence and I were among the first people who signed up. It didn’t take but a few weeks and I was totally hooked. I couldn’t do a pull up, hadn’t jumped rope (I couldn’t do a single), and hadn’t ever done Oly lifting. But I stuck to it, practiced, and worked hard. After about a year, I competed in my first Crossfit competition.
How has CrossFit impacted your life?
Crossfit changes how you look at life. It’s my hobby, the way I stay in shape, and my social outlet. It reminds you that people can be good and supportive of each other, no matter what level they are within Crossfit. There’s something really cool about everyone working that hard that brings them together. You celebrate everybody’s accomplishments and that’s something that I think we all need. I’m never going to be the elite athlete in the gym, but I really enjoy the little victories like when I do well in a WOD or get something that I’ve been working on for a while. Those are the things that motivate me.
What do you enjoy about being a member at CrossFit NCS?
I bopped around to different boxes for a couple of years after I moved to Colorado Springs, but I couldn’t seem to find the right combination of programming and community. I was pretty biased by my old box. But I truly missed Crossfit, so I kept hoping that I’d find a place that fit. I consider it a great gift in my life that I’ve found Crossfit NCS. A place like this changes you when you let it.
What’s your favorite workout?
I can’t say I have a favorite, but I like anything that involves a barbell. So, maybe DT?
What would your birthday workout be?
Anything without burpees or wall balls. Scratch that. I LOVE burpees and wall balls!
Do you have a quote/motto you live by?
Not all who wander are lost.
What’s a fun item on your bucket list?
I just ran my first Spartan Race. I’d like to run a Beast before I turn 50.
What’s something fun/awesome/interesting you’d like people to know about you?
I’m a dad first and foremost. I truly love my kids. And my dog.
